DAS PROJEKT    EL PROYECTO  •  THE PROJECT

The project „Himmelstausch“ (Sky Interchange) takes up the cloud banner flights of the early phase of the „Sky Pieces“, adding an historical dimension. The banners will be painted by a small international team on the base of photographs which have been taken on site .

On April 26, 1937, during the so-called Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), the Basque town of Gernika was totally destroyed by bombs of the German Legion Condor. Pablo Picasso's famous painting »Guernica« for the World Expo 1937 in Paris keeps the memory alive. Nazi-Germany used the war as a test field for World War II which broke out shortly afterwards. Neither in Spain nor in Germany, the Spanish War has been looked back on and reappraised in a satisfactory way. In Spain, fascist General Franco ruled until 1975. After his death, secrecy was taking hold on the past. It was not until 2007 that the „Ley de Memoria Histórica“ was established, allowing the reappraisal of the Spanish War. Although German policy apologized formally in 1997/98, it never came to reparation payments. – Apart from the wish and necessity to contribute to commemorative culture in general, there is a personal motivation for Michael Klant to develop this project: his father was forced to fight in the artillery of the Legion Condor as a young man.
